Held at the Heritage Motor Centre, Warwickshire, the event was set for a fantastic start as ’888 A’ went under the hammer first.
With a reserve price of just £3,000, onlookers were left stunned as the opening lot soared in price.
As three bidders locked horns, the price continued to rise to over ten times higher than the reserve price.
The winning bidder, a businessman from the north-east of England, won the personalised registration with a final bid of £39,500.
Even the DVLA were taken aback by the success of the first sale.
Damien Lawson, DVLA Personalised Registrations‘ Marketing Manager, explained: “Eight is viewed as a lucky number in some communities, and today it certainly proved lucky for us. We were quite stunned when the hammer finally came down.”
Over 1,500 personalised registrations went on sale during the DVLA’s auction event, and ’888 A’ wasn’t the only number plate to catch the public’s interest.
Paul Quinn, a Manchester United fanatic, set his heart on ‘UTD 80Y’ and didn’t stop bidding until the registration was his.
With a reserve price of just £450, nobody expected the final price to soar 20 times higher to £10,000, but Mr Quinn was determined to make the number plate his.
Owner of the Town Hall Hotel, Manchester, Mr Quinn would have paid £40,000 to make it his but declared “I wouldn’t sell it for £140,000!”
“I can’t believe it, it’s a perfect plate. I have another UTD registration, but this is the tops,” he added.
Don’t miss out on the next DVLA auction at the Williams F1 Conference Centre on 27th, 28th and 29th July 2011.
