Tying in with the launch of a £300,000 Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, police took to the roads in Keighley, West Yorkshire, to slash road crime.
The operation, which spanned the whole of Bradford, led to eight vehicles being seized and the recovery of a stolen mini digger.
West Yorkshire Police worked closely with representatives from the DVLA and VOSA, in order to carry out checks on 300 vehicles.
Chief Superintendant of Bradford Police, Allan Doherty, hailed the crackdown a success and added:
“By expanding ANPR capability from Bradford city centre out to Keighley and surrounding areas for the first time our “ring of steel” is now stronger than ever.”
“It truly gives us potential to strike fear into criminals who think they can get around the district unseen.”
“We are aware of the anger lawful motorists feel when they hear about others flouting the rules and I hope the scale of this effort will reassure residents that we are all dedicated to tackling this problem.”
“To any drivers who are uninsured I would suggest you insure your vehicles now, as I can assure you that you will be caught and we will be hitting you where it hurts — in your pocket.”
Automatic Number Plate Recognition helped snare motorists who had committed a range of crimes including driving without insurance, driving whilst disqualified and drugs related offences.
