2X up for grabs at the next DLVA auction

We have mentioned before some of the great number plates that are going to feature at the next DVLA auction on the 7th, 8th and 9th of October. However one plate that is up for grabs that we have not already talked about is the amazing personalised plate ‘2X’.

It is not that often that single number and single letter plates come on to the open market and even more unusual that two plates such as these are going to be auctioned at the forthcoming DVLA auction (the other plate is ‘5O’). The plate ‘2X’ has a reserve price of £10,000 and just from this figure you can see the expected level of interest. Some internet sites are talking about the plates going for more than £100,000 and if there are two interested parties that have the funds the sky is the limit.

If your budget will not reach to the dizzy heights the plate ‘2X’ might reach, then there are loads of other great plates up for grabs at the auction as well. We will bring you more news about the cherished plates available in forthcoming articles.

Personalised number plates can really make your car stand out from the crowd. And, if you have got a little extra cash to put into your purchase you will really be able to get hold of a plate that distinctively depicts your name. Plates such as ‘7ONY’ can easily be recognised as a person’s name (TONY) and can give your car a unique identity.

Some of these types of number plates will of course already be taken but there are still some available such as ‘9ACK’ and ‘DAN10L’. These plates would be great is your name is Jack or Daniel and they are coming up for sale soon in the next DVLA auction.

We have mentioned the auction dates before, but for all those of you who don’t already know, the next DVLA auction is to be held on the 7th, 8th and 9th of October. Anti theft screws are being added to number plates, after there has been a significant rise in the number of number plate thefts in Great Britain. Stolen number plates have then gone on to be linked to serious crimes such as murder and buglaries. The standard screws used to attach a number plate to a vehicle will be replaced with anti-theft clutch-head screws. It is a simple procedure and the screws costs around £25. The police hope that this will deter individuals from stealing number plates.

The police in the UK have an advanced system called number plate recognition which can detect whether or not a number plate has been reported as stolen, been used in a crime or the driver is driving a vehicle with no valid insurance or road tax. The number plates acts as the identity to a car. It is illegal in the UK to drive a vehicle using false plates and the penalties for doing so are very harsh indeed.

If you are looking to purchase a private or personalised number plate you must ensure that your vehicle is re registered with the DVLA with your new number plate before you attach it to your vehicle.

Personalised number plates are a fashionable accessory to have on your motor. However, with 31 million number plates available, so there are hundreds of different combinations that you could go for.

The DVLA hold an auction four times a year to auction off some of the most popular personalised number plates. More often than not they signify someone’s initials, business or nickname. Most personalised numberplates are fairly priced, however, if there is competition for a particular number plate the price of the plate can soar into thousands of pounds.

It is not uncommon to hear of famous celebrities such as footballers and actors to spend thousands of pounds on a car and then further splash out on getting themselves a personalised plate. You can select any letter, then any number and then a choice of a three letter combination for the end of your personalised plate. These are the most commonly found personalised plates. Prices generally start from around £250 although this can vary significantly.

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR)

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) is a hot topic on the web at the moment with both sides of the argument being discussed at length. Whatever you think about it, it looks here to stay. The technology used is really sophisticated, the camera captures an image of the plate and then converts it into a text string. This text string is then compared to a database of registration numbers so police can check the car’s status. By using infra-red cameras the plate recognition system works at night too.

The system is currently being used by many police forces in the UK, and in Lancashire 25 fixed ANPR cameras are going to be installed on the counties roads as part of the polices action plan to tackle travelling criminals. It has in fact been in use since 2002 by the police but seems to becoming more widespread.

Whether you own a standard DVLA number plate or a personalised number plate, it doesn’t really matter. If your vehicle has been involved in, or associated with a crime, the number could be on a police database somewhere. Is this an infringement of personal data? We leave it up to you to decide.

Celebrity number plates

You may have noticed that your favourite footballer has a private number plate on their car. This is usually a really desirable plate that would fetch thousands of pounds if it were to go to the market again. These types of plates usually depict only a couple of letters or number. For example, the plate CR7, which Christiano Ronaldo made a bid for before he left Manchester United. This of course was his initials followed by his shirt number.

Premiership footballers usually also have some fantastic cars to put their personalised plates on. The plates are not only used to give their cars a unique identity they also add style to the vehicle. Many celebrities also have private number plates for their cars too, so you can see how the craze is taking hold.

However, you don’t have to be a Premiership footballer or a celebrity to have your own personalised number plate. If you want a plate that only has a couple of numbers or letters you might need a celebrities pay packet but there are many more personalised plates that are still available that don’t cost a fortune.

With more and more great personalised number plates released by the DVLA all the time. Now is the time to check online to see if any plates that may not have been released before (or in fact personalised plates that used to be taken) are now available.

If you have not done a search online for some time to find a number plate that matches your requirements then there is no time like the present. The search facilities that many website employ to find plates are now much more user friendly than they were in the past. Some sites will even let you just type a name or any combination of letters or numbers into a search field and will then search their database to try to match the best plates they have to your search query.

You could choose a plate that represents your name or a plate that depicts your nickname or other funny saying or term. To give you an indication of the wide variety of plates available, recent plates that have just been released by the DVLA include the words COW and BAG plus of course a prefix letter and numbers.
