It has recently been reported in the news that a number of controversial number plate combinations have now been banned in the Netherlands because they are associated with political organisations and institutions.
The three-letter acronym PVV is one of the number plates in question that has now been banned. This is because it represents the Freedom Party (Partij voor de Vrijheid) led by Geert Wilders and the Dutch ministry of transport have now decided to put a stop to these car number plates.
In the Netherlands, Dutch registration plates consist of three numbers with three consonants (and no vowels).
This is not the only three-letter number plate to be banned from registration plates in the country because of its association and meaning. Inflammatory or offensive plates such as KKK (Ku Klux Klan), NSB (1930s fascist party), PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) and GVD (an explicit profanity) are also banned because of their close links to an organisation.
The PVV are all set to question this ban in the Dutch parliament but it remains to be seen whether there is any chance the ban will be overturned.
