Sal Adams from Preston in Lancashire, who had set up a website to promote Liverpool FC registration plates, is being investigated by police after a number of fans had complained they had lost thousands of pounds through the site.
Mr Adams had purchased the F9 LFC registration plate two years ago as it represented star striker Fernando Torres’ number 9 shirt. He also had other number plates including E1 LFC to stand for England’s number one.
The dealer had encouraged supporters to sell their unique Liverpool number plates though this site as he had built up contacts within the club itself, and in the Middle East. They expected to make around £100,000 for plates but ended up with claims to pay up to £2,000 in fees and donations to charity.
The site was said to have been founded to sell the Torres plate to raise money for UNICEF, but the charity had distanced themselves and told the Liverpool ECHO newspaper that they did not approve of their trademark being on the site.
Whatever the outcome of the investigation, it just goes to show that you should always trade your personalised number plates through a reputable and genuine dealer. Make sure you only used sites which can be verified as a DVLA recognised reseller and quality registered.
