It was recently reported that a number of cars were seized and arrests were made in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. This was all thanks to the efforts of the West Yorkshire Police’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition team who happened to be in the district for an operation.
These days, with the advancements in technology, it is much easier to recognise and track number plates, so for us law-abiding citizens in the majority this is certainly good news. Number plate recognition officials can look at different issues from things like burglary and vehicle theft to driving without insurance.
The ANPR system used by authorities, such as West Yorkshire Police, utilises a network of cameras that can scan the number plates of vehicles. These registrations are then run through police and insurance databases to check if a vehicle has been used to commit an offence.
Hopefully we will not ever need to benefit from such technology ourselves, but it is good to know there are now ways to combat crime. It is always sensible to consider the security of our prized automobiles anyway and make sure their safety is of paramount importance.
