Your Car Plate uniquely identifies your vehicle. But whilst an allocated unique car plate originally introduced to track down vehicles for legal reasons (taxes, fines, if it's been involved in a crime, or an accident etc.), it didn't take long for people to realise that your car plate can reflect your personality as well.

The First Car Plate

The very first car plate secured was A 1 (as you might expect) by Earl Russell, who stood outside the Vehicle Registration Office all night to secure it. A personalised car plate can now tell you more about the driver than the vehicle, what their initials are, their date of birth, a lucky number, what kind of sense of humour they have... and because they're transferable, you don't have to let go of your car plate when you change your vehicle.

Storing a Car Plate

Even if you don't yet have a car (or any other vehicle) on which to display your ideal plate you can still buy one! Most registrations come on certificates which show you as the legal owner. These certificates have a lifespan of 12 months, after which they need to be renewed. If you then obtain a vehicle you can transfer the number to it, or you can keep hold of the number on certificate indefinitely - so long as you remember to renew it!

There are two types of certificate, a pink A4 size certificate of entitlement and a green retention certificate. The former stores a car plate which has never been on a vehicle before, the latter retains a plate which has been taken off a vehicle.

In both cases, the car plate can be assigned to a suitable vehicle registered in the name of the person at the top or in the name of the nominee. DVLA will not allow you to alter the name of the purchaser but you can change the nominee for a current fee of £25.

Because of this facility of keeping a car plate on certificate, registration numbers make ideal presents and investments.
