Car Plates UK

Car Plates in the UK follow some very distinct patterns. All reg must conform to these formats - if they're personalised or simply standard issue. We do get the occasional customer enquiring after reg that simply aren't valid in the UK - sometimes because they're not too sure which formats are available, sometimes because they've seen a reg like this on a TV show. Remember, KITT might be a valid license plate for Knight Rider, but it wouldn't be valid on UK roads!

Throughout the world the format of registrations varies greatly. On top of the differences in the ordering of numbers and letters, the appearances of the plates themselves differs tremendously (as does the materials they're made out of). All of you will be familiar with the yellow and white plates with bold black letters on UK roads. Some of you may recall the stylish silver or white letters on black plates that preceeded these. Recent additions to car plates in the UK include borders, flags and 3D lettering, but all the reg still follow a set layout and styling. Infact, it's illegal to misrepresent your plates in anyway outside the laws defining their appearance.

However, if you were driving around the Bahamas, you'd be sporting a bright blue number plate with an even brighter yellow lettering on it. The reg would quite literally be a number plate - there's no letters on it (e.g '1234' would be a valid reg). It does, however, have to sport a stamp indicating from which island it originates (such as 'Harbour Island').

There's so much variety around the world that collecting the actual plates themselves has become a hobby for many. If you're interested in checking out some international registrations then a great resource online is www.worldlicenseplates.com.
