Car Reg Plates

So What Do Car Reg Plates Say About The Owner?

While the Car Reg Plates market remains something of a mystery to many people in the UK, when you consider that there are literally millions of Private Reg plates out there, the choice of what you want to say about yourself and your car is enormous. Whether you go for the classic, dateless, Cherished Number Plates or Number Plates which are of more personal meaning to you, the choice is yours, depending on your budget.

What Kind Of Car Reg Plates Are On Offer?

When you consider that there have been some major changes to the format of UK number plates over the last century, you might just begin to see the potentially interesting Cherished Numbers on offer. The styles include :-

Car Reg Plates Before 1932

While the History Of Registrations shows they were first mooted in 1903, registration marks never came into use until 1904 when the very basic A 1 to YY 9999 format was introduced. This was a very simple system although the growth in he number of cars on the road soon took the authorities by surprise and 1932 saw the first change in the format of the car number plate.

Car Reg Plates 1932 to 1963

In 1932 we saw the AAA 1 to YYY 999 number plate format introduced, and while many thought that this format would last for many years they were mistaken! As the number of cars on the road continued to spiral between 1932 and 1963 the authorities were quickly forced to plan ahead for the future and look toward the next number plate format.

However, it was in the early 1960s that we saw the first signs of a cherished number plates market, with one bright spark at the DVLC suggesting that some of the more prominent number plates should be held back and auctioned off at a later date. This was the start of the Private Number Plates market, a market which has seen massive growth over the years and ever increasing interest from people in all walks of life.

Car Reg Plates 1963 to 1982

The next format which was adopted by the DVLC was the AAA 1A to YYY 999A type, with the A showing year 1, then changed to B for year 2, C for year 3, etc. It was at this time when more letters and number were becoming present on number plates that we saw interest in the Rude Number Plates and Funny Number Plates market rise substantially. It was also around this time that the older number plates, which had been issued many years earlier, were becoming collector’s items and starting to change hands for big money.

Car Reg Plates 1983 to 2001

In 1983 we saw a reversal of the former format, to A1 AAA to Y999 YYY, in the hope that this would see the system through for many years, but yet again this hope was short lived with the system changed in 2001 to the format we have now.

Car Reg Plates 2001

The current car registration plate format of BD (location code) 51 (year marker) SMR (random letters) was introduced in 2001 and it is forecast that there are enough variations available, via this format, to see the system through to 2050 although time will tell!
