How to Make a SORN

Make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) if your vehicle is not being taxed and you're keeping it off the road. As with tax, a vehicle can be declared SORN online, by phone or when applying for a refund of your tax.

How to make a SORN

Registered keepers can declare their vehicle is off the road via DVLA's online service, or by their telephone service. DVLA sends a confirmation letter within four weeks. You should contact DVLA if you do not receive it.

Online SORN

Note the reference number from your V5C registration certificate, V11 or V85/1 reminder and use DVLA's online SORN service.

Phone SORN

Note the reference number from your V5C registration certificate, V11 or V85/1 reminder and call DVLA on 0300 123 4321.

Recently Registered Keepers

For new keepers who received a V5C in the current month, complete form V890 Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). Send the form to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AR.

Unregistered Keeper

You will need to apply for a registration certificate. Use the current V5C's section six and fill out a V890. Send both to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AR.

Refunds and Nil Value Tax Discs

If you're applying for a refund or returning a nil value tax disc because you're keeping the vehicle off the road, you must make a SORN from the V14 application form.

Buying a Vehicle with SORN

The day you buy the vehicle marks the end of the SORN period with the previous keeper. Make a new SORN if you intend to keep the vehicle off the road.

Re-taxing following SORN

Vehicles can be re-taxed using a V5C online or by phone.

Receiving your Notification

Expect a letter from DVLA within four weeks of declaring SORN. Contact DVLA if you have not heard from them after this time - call them on 0300 790 6802.
