DVLC Style Plates

This is not the real title as it should be one DVLA, as DVLC refers to something that was formed in 1965 and round to 1990 when the Government decided it was sexy to have agencies and changed it's name to DVLA.

Style Plates refers to the type of plate it is, ie: Cherished, Prefix, Suffix or now what it's referred to as new format plates.

What is a new format plate? It's a plate that has two letters, two numbers, grouped together then a space followed by three random letters.

The first two letters refer to the area, such as NU is Newcastle and the two numbers refer to the year, such as 02 would be 2002 issued in March and then 52 refers to September 2002.

The old suffix system ran out at Y which is March 2001, so 01 was never actually released and the first new format reg was 51. DVLA formally DVLC, released the full range for sale 3 months prior. They release a staggering 7.5 million plates apart from a few they withhold for auction. The full range is released for one month only then they hand back 6.4 million to the local licensing offices for them to register on vehicles in the country. The residual 1.1 million, are then left on sale indefinitely.

From National Numbers viewpoint, the chairman Eric Craggs, feels that this is flooding the market place with these new format plates and for this reason, he would not consider most of them to be a good investment.
