Irish Registration Plates

I have often wondered why Ireland was allocated an I or Z.

I can understand the I for Ireland but I don't understand why they were allocated the Z, unless it was just the end of the alphabet. So if you see a plate driving round with CIL, this denotes Irish registration plates.

Some real fascinating history attached to these Irish plates, and like the English system they go back to 1903.

Lets take an interesting example of LZ 1, who owns that do you think? It was owned by Peter Grant, he is the Manager of Led Zeplin, the famous musician. He also owns BAD 1, nearly as good as MAD 1.

MAD 1 was owned by Elite Registrations in the past but I think he has now sold it. I think if I had owned MAD 1, I would have been reluctant to sell it on. I also think he owned 1 TVR.

Coming back to Irish registration plates, lets look at another rare example. The earliest and lowest OZ number was originally on a 1952 Austin Sheeline, however you may think 1 OZ would be a rare plate but this is not the case.

Since the DVLA in Northern Ireland (DVLNI) never reversed these combinations, 1 OZ was auctioned in February 1996 and only fetched £7,500. I would estimate in today's market this plate to be worth £50-60,000.

Without doubt, irish reg plates are a very good investment. The hot tip of today is the BIG plates and in the future the DIG plates, these will be worth hundreds of pounds in the near future.
