DVLA has hosted its second national enforcement conference on the theme 'Working together – driving down vehicle crime'
(on 12 November 2003). DVLA brought together representatives from the Driver, Vehicle and Operator Group, Department for
Transport (DfT), police, local authorities, fire service and for the first time representatives from the motor trade,
motoring organisations and insurance companies. The event updated delegates on the Agency's progress since
the last conference, as well as outlining a range of new initiatives and encouraging partnership working, by showing what
can be achieved.
Television presenter and journalist Quentin Willson once again chaired the event. DVLA's Chief Executive Clive
Bennett welcomed all the delegates to the conference and The Hon. Gwyneth Dunwoody MP for Crewe and Nantwich
and chair of the Transport Select Committee gave a very well received keynote speech.
There were presentations from Surrey Police about how the police and DVLA are working in partnership to reduce vehicle
crime, and from the Department for Transport about continuous registration and its impact. BMW gave a presentation
on the security innovations and key identification on new vehicles. The Home Office spoke about meeting the
Government's vehicle crime reduction target. There were also presentations from the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency
and the Association of British Insurers.
The day was a great success with many delegates commenting on the quality of the conference, 95% of delegates
said they would like to attend the next conference.
