Theft Proof Number Plates

New thief-proof number plates have been unveiled in the war on car crime. An estimated 33,000 number plates were stolen
during 2004, with many more thefts going unreported. Many of these plates are subsequently used to disguise vehicles used
in serious criminal activity - a practice termed 'cloning'.
The goal of these new plates is to reduce the number of innocent drivers who receive fines for something they did not do
and who have then the task of proving their innocence.
Working with a number of plate manufacturers, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) have agreed an industry
standard for the new plates. To meet this standard plates must not be removable in under three minutes or cannot be
reused after removal. This now allows manufacturers to bring DVLA-approved theft-resistant number plates to market.
