Private Car Registrations
You can read more in more detail about this whole subject in Number Plate Info but, briefly, Private Car Registrations refer where the owner has actually chosen a mark for his or her vehicle which is different from that allocated by DVLA. I suppose, to take an analogy, the idea is similar to choosing a private school or a private hospital. Whenever an element of choice is exercised, the purchaser has not only to pay the price of the private plate but also has to pay a transfer fee, currently at £80 or an assignment fee of £105. The transfer fee applies if the chosen mark is still registered to another vehicle. The £105 refers to a mark held on a retention certificate. Very often, private or personal registrations are purchased on certificates of entitlement where the mark has never been registered to a vehicle before - in this case, you are required to pay an £80 assignment fee "up front". Certificates are valid initially for one year and renewable for £25 per year.
