Registrations, cheap reg numbers for initials or name | National Numbers

About the Terms Used, Including "Registrations"

Registrations is a wide term which is used to cover the following meanings: Vehicle registration marks, registration numbers, number plates, etc. Users on our site tend to be searching for a personal, private, cherished or personalised reg again, all inter-changeable terms.

You may be looking for your initials, name or significant birth-date or, perhaps, you are looking to sell a registration mark on your vehicle or on a certificate. Perhaps, at this point, we could just briefly outline the stages we go through if you are thinking of selling a registration.

Selling Registrations

We offer a unique, free-valuation service for vehicle registrations - this calculates a computer generated valuation, taking into account the rarity, statistical popularity of the letters, whether the mark resembles a word or name. Please don't forget that this is a computer generated quote and no system is infallible - so, if the program has missed something and comes back with a lower amount than you expected, just enter your estimate of your registration's worth.

Remember, that the more realistic the price, the more likely you are to achieve a sale.

With your agreement (via telephone and/or email) we will advertise your registration or registrations on our database, on the web site and, if appropriate, in magazines like AutoTrader.

We will refer any sensible offers to you which you are at liberty to reject if you wish. However, we expect you to sell if we offer you your asking price, or at least, let us know before-hand if you withdraw the registration from sale for any reason.

If we agree a deal, we will confirm in writing and request either your vehicle documents or the certificate for the registration mark.

In the former case, will put your documents together with the buyer's along with a form V317 into the local Department of Transport office. It is traditional in the industry that the buyer pays the transfer fee (currently £80) which also covers the re-registering of the seller's (donor) vehicle with an age-related plate.

New tax discs are issued, showing all the tax previously paid for, new V20's are issued or MOT's re-stamped with the replacement mark and new V5/C (registration certificates) will follow direct from DVLA, Swansea.

We pride ourselves in paying our seller's as soon as possible - we release payment as soon as we have sight of our buyer's new tax disc showing the new registration mark.

If registrations are stored on certificates, we need to insert our buyer's name as "nominee" by sending to DVLA together with their £25 fee. We release payment as soon as we have the amended certificate back in the office together with the necessary signed authorisation from you to allow National Numbers to administer the certificate, eventually assigning to our buyer's vehicle.

Again, I stress that we pay you as soon as possible, while protecting our buyer's interests as well.

We see our role very much as bringing the buyer and seller of registrations together as smoothly as possible - registrations are not able to be bought and sold like ordinary commodities such as carpets or television sets. Legally, they always belong to the Secretary of State for Transport - it is the right to display which is traded. This is why we always have to ask for full payment up front since there is no way we can re-possess registrations once they have been transferred.

This is why we go the the trouble and expense of becoming registered to the British Standard Institute's Quality Mark, being executive members of the main governing body (CNDA) and affiliated to the RMI.

Most importantly, we have bags of experience and there are not many snags, hold-ups and problems that we haven't come across before.

As you can see, if we don't perform properly, there are outside bodies you can complain to.

Buying Registrations

From a buyer's point of view, much of what has been written above is of interest and relevance since there are two sides to any deal. Depending on the type of transaction, we will request either your vehicle documents or the exact name which appears or will appear on the registration document (V5/C) to which the mark will eventually be assigned. As explained above, we ask you for the full balance although we will not cash a cheque or take a balance from credit card until we are in a position to proceed with the transfer of the registration.

This is why it is important to deal through an established, reputable company since, if anything at all goes wrong (except if you fail to produce correct documentation) then you are entitled to a full refund of all monies paid. This is written in our terms of business, insisted on by both CNDA and RMI (Retail Motor Industry)

Of course, the above information applies where the registrations being offered for sale are on commission for a member of the public. We hold a large number of registrations in stock on certificate so we don't have to rely on a third party.

Make Your Own Plate or Registration

The simplest way of all to buy a private number plate is to choose from the unissed prefix or new style registrations which have never been on a vehicle before and come in the form of a certificate.

All we have to do in this case, is make sure we get the certificate printed with the exact name of the future keeper of the vehicle on it. The certificate takes about 3-4 working days to arrive, after which time we can either assign the mark for you (we take a service charge but at least you don't have to queue at your local Dept. of Transport Office) or you can do it locally - simple instructions are supplied.
