Lotus Inspired cars have been producing cars since 1948 out of a garage. Colin Chapman and Colin Dare formed the company ’Lotus Engineering Limited’ in 1952 and opened the first plant in 1954. At the same time, team Lotus split off from the main company to pursue Colin Chapmans goal of redefining racing. The company is now headquartered on the former RAF Hethel site, where the old runway forms a useful part of the test circuit.
Lotus were renowned for their ground breaking redesigns on chassis systems and lightweight design. Lotus owners enjoyed many of these race-bred inventions, with Lotus’ motorsport features also used in many of their production vehicles.
Lotus have legendary fame, particularly with Graham Hill and Ayrton Senna, but most notably with the late and great Jim Clark, who was instrumental in helping to tune and guide the Lotus engineers in a way only Jim Clark could. The livery from the Lotus John Player Special cars is still one of the most widely recognised and loved in F1 history.
Lotus are still making ground breaking cars under new ownership The Geely Group, selling 1.5 million cars per year.
