How Do I Remove My Number Plate?

Sometimes you need to take a number plate off your car. Reasons can be anything from wanting to take a private number plate off a car and keep the registration on a retention certificate, replacing damaged number plates so needing to take number plates off your car to fit new ones, or selling a car with a private number plate that you want to keep.

Here's our easy step-by-step guide on how to remove your number plate from a vehicle.

Removing a number plate which is screwed on to your vehicle.

  • Some car registrations are applied to the vehicle using number plate screws.
  • To remove these, all you need to do is unscrew the screws and the number plate will be removed.
  • You may need a drill for this, but be careful it's on the unscrew setting or you may damage your number plates
  • Keep hold of the old screws just in case you want to screw a new registration on to the vehicle. The old number plate screws will fit perfectly in to the required hole on your car for fitting the next set of number plates.

Removing a number plate which is stuck on to your vehicle with adhesive pads or stickers.

  • Most number plates are secured with adhesive stickers or pads in this day and age, and they are slightly more complicated to remove than a simple screw.
  • First, apply pressure to the back of your number plate as evenly as possible.
  • This may take up to a minute, with some adjustments required. Be careful with this as you don't want to snap your number plate.
  • You can use a thin tool for this such as a wallpaper scraper.
  • The time it takes to remove a number plate from a car will depend on the total number of number plate adhesive pads or stickers used.

And that's it! Simple as that. If you caused damage when removing your number plates, you can order replacements here.
