DVLA Dateless and Cherished Number Plates
Dateless number plates are among the most sought-after DVLA plates because they do not include a year identifier. This means they can be assigned to vehicles of any age, subject to DVLA rules.
Many dateless and cherished number plates are valued for their short format, history and prestige. DVLA also releases previously unissued combinations through DVLA auctions, often including rare registrations that match names, words or memorable initials.
Once a registration has been issued to a vehicle, it will not return to DVLA auction as fresh government stock. Dateless plates already available for sale may therefore have previous ownership history, with some dating back to the earliest years of UK vehicle registration.
DVLA Prefix Number Plates
Prefix number plates were issued from 1983 to 2001. They place the year-identifying letter at the front, followed by one, two or three numbers and three letters, such as A123 ABC.
Prefix DVLA registrations work well for names, initials and words because the numbers can often be used creatively. Examples include formats such as P4 UL, S4 RAH and A1 ABC. Some combinations were withheld from general issue by DVLA, including low numbers, repeated numbers and plates that clearly formed names, words or desirable combinations.

DVLA Suffix Number Plates
Suffix number plates were issued from 1963 to 1983. They use the reverse structure of prefix plates, with three letters, one to three numbers and a year-identifying letter at the end, such as ABC 123A.
Suffix plates can be valuable when the letters and numbers create a strong name, word, initials or memorable sequence. Examples include formats such as SAM 1A, BEN 8S and ABC 123A. They also appeal to buyers who want an older registration format with a more traditional feel.
Northern Irish Number Plates
Northern Irish number plates are another popular option for buyers looking at DVLA registrations. They usually use two or three letters containing I or Z, followed by one to four numbers, such as AZ 1234, JAZ 1234 or AAZ 12.
Northern Irish plates do not carry an obvious year identifier in the same way as prefix, suffix or new style plates. The age-neutral format can work well for initials, short letter combinations and affordable plate ideas.
DVLA New Style Number Plates
New style DVLA number plates have been used for vehicles registered from 2001 onwards. They follow the format AB12 CDE, with two area letters, a two-digit age identifier and three final letters.
This format makes up a large part of the modern DVLA registrations market. New style plates are often more affordable than dateless, prefix or suffix plates, but they can still be desirable when the letters and numbers create a clear word, business reference, car model or memorable phrase. Examples include formats such as AB12 CDE, BO55 MAN and BA55 GTR.

What Happens After You Buy a DVLA Plate?
After you buy a DVLA plate, you are buying the right to assign that registration to a suitable vehicle. This is different from fitting physical number plates straight away.
Depending on the registration, it may be supplied with a V750 Certificate of Entitlement, held on a V778 Retention Document or prepared for assignment to your vehicle. At checkout, you can choose for National Numbers to handle the assignment process on your behalf.
The registration must be assigned before it can be displayed on the vehicle. Once the assignment has been approved, you can arrange for physical plates to be made and fitted. These must meet UK number plate law, including rules around spacing, materials and supplier requirements.
