Can You Put a Private Number Plate on a Motorbike?

Yes. Private number plates can be assigned to motorcycles as long as the bike and registration meet DVLA requirements.

The same age rules apply as they do to cars. A private registration cannot make a motorcycle appear newer than it is, so an age-related prefix, suffix or new style plate must be suitable for the bike’s date of registration. Dateless and Northern Irish registrations do not carry an age identifier, giving riders more flexibility when choosing a plate.

Dateless number plates offer the widest choice of compact registrations. 3x3 registrations such as BMW 123 or HOG 123 are a strong fit for a two-line rear plate, while also giving riders enough letters to reference a manufacturer, model, initials or riding interest. Even shorter formats are available through 1x1, 1x2, 2x1 and 2x2 combinations.

Northern Irish number plates use a separate numbering system from mainland UK plates and commonly follow formats such as ABZ 1234 or AAZ 12. Every Northern Irish registration includes either an I or a Z, and there is no year identifier, so the registration itself does not reveal the vehicle’s age.

Prefix plates, suffix plates and new style registrations give riders plenty of scope for initials, names, racing numbers and model references.

How To Buy A Private Plate For A Motorbike

2. Buy The Registration

Once you've found the perfect plate for your bike, select it and review the price and applicable fees. Most registrations can be purchased online. If you'd rather speak to someone first, our team is available on 01642 363738. Finance is available on eligible registrations.

3. Assign It To Your Motorbike

After purchase, the registration is assigned to your motorcycle through the DVLA. You'll need the V5C log book for your bike and the registration document (V750 or V778). If you'd prefer us to handle the paperwork, add our assignment service at checkout.

Laws For Motorbike Registrations

A private registration does not change the rules for how a number plate must be displayed on a motorcycle. Once the registration has been assigned, the physical plate still needs to meet the same legal requirements as any other motorbike plate.

Rear plate only: Motorcycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must display the registration at the rear only. Older bikes may also display a front plate, but this is optional.
Two-line layout: Motorcycle registrations are normally displayed across two lines. Older motorcycles have some exceptions.
Motorcycle-sized characters: Standard motorcycle characters are 64mm high and 44mm wide, with specific requirements for stroke width, margins and spacing.
Yellow reflective background: The rear plate must use black characters on a reflective yellow background.
Correct font and spacing: Characters cannot be moved, altered or incorrectly spaced to make a private registration read differently. Tints, films or fixings must not affect legibility.
British Standard: Plates fitted on or after 1 September 2021 must meet BS AU 145e and carry the required supplier and standard markings.
Vehicle age: You cannot assign a private registration that makes your motorcycle appear newer than it is.

Moving A Private Plate Between A Car And Motorbike

A private registration is not permanently tied to one vehicle type. If you already have a plate on a car and want to move it to a motorbike, or the other way around, the registration can be transferred between eligible vehicles.

The registration will need to be retained (removed from the current vehicle and placed onto a certificate) before it can be assigned to the new one. The receiving vehicle must meet DVLA requirements.
