What Is a Suffix Number Plate?
Suffix registration plates were introduced in 1963, when the supply of dateless combinations was running out. The new format gave each registration a year-identifying letter at the end of the plate, making it easy to determine a vehicle's age at a glance.
The format typically consists of three letters, followed by a number of up to three digits, and a final letter that represents the registration year.
The three letters originally identified the area where the registration was issued, while the number was sequential. The suffix letter at the end made it possible to determine both the age and origin of the vehicle.
Because the three opening letters are the most prominent part of the plate, they work well for displaying initials, abbreviations or the start of a name. Numbers can also stand in for letters to complete the read: 3 for E, 5 for S, 1 for I, and 4 for A.

When Were Suffix Registrations Issued?
Suffix registrations were issued between 1963 and 1983, with a new suffix letter introduced each year to indicate the age of the vehicle. This system replaced earlier dateless registrations and remained in place until prefix registrations were introduced in 1983.
The first four suffix letters (A to D) were released on a calendar year basis, running January to December. From 1967, the DVLA moved to an August to July cycle, starting with the E and F suffixes both being issued in 1967. This change was designed to spread demand more evenly across the year rather than concentrating it in January.
