The £926,000 Reg and the World of Hyper Number Plates
In November 2025, the registration 1 F sold for £926,000 at RM Sotheby's London Auction, including fees. This made it the most expensive UK number plate ever, and it wasn't a one-off. Join us as we delve into the world of incredibly expensive, hyper private number plates in this article.
The story of 1 F
1 F was first issued by Essex County Council in 1957. And for decades, it sat in the world of official cars and long-term private owners, changing hands only occasionally.
When it did change hands, the jumps were huge, first selling for £144,000 in 2005. Twenty years later, it fetched more than six times that figure.
RM Sotheby's described the result as a world record for a UK registration at auction, with the price tag tantalisingly close to the £1 million mark nobody in the UK market has crossed yet.
A record that didn't last long
Before 1 F, the UK auction record belonged to JB 1. It sold at Bonhams during the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2025 for £608,600.
That sale was a landmark in itself. It broke a record that had stood since 2014, when 25 O set the benchmark at a DVLA auction with a hammer price of £400,000.
So, in the space of four months, the UK record moved from a plate that sold over a decade ago to two brand new six-figure benchmarks. This tells you a lot about where demand sits at the top of the market.

The other plates that set 2025 alight
1 F and JB 1 grabbed the headlines, but they weren't the only big sales in a busy year.
DB 1 sold at Bonhams in September 2025 for £437,000, going straight into the UK's top ten.
JK 1 sold at Iconic Auctioneers in November 2025 for £336,000. It had changed hands for £209,300 in 2024.
15 LAM sold at the DVLA's own auction in January 2026 for a total of £192,908 including fees.
The JK 1 sale is the one that catches the eye. A rise of more than £126,000 in roughly a year is the kind of growth that makes investors sit up and take notice.

How the UK compares globally
As impressive as £926,000 is, it's still small change on the world stage. The world's most expensive plate is P7 from Dubai, which sold in 2023 for around £12 million.
The UK market works differently, however, as in the Gulf, single-digit plates are often sold at charity auctions with huge headline bids. Here, the value is built through history, scarcity and decades of steady trading. That's arguably what makes UK plates such a stable store of value.
It's also why many British buyers see a private plate as an asset they can keep, transfer and sell later. Our guide on how number plates are valued explains the factors in more detail.
Are number plates a good investment?
The records above show that the best plates have grown in value. However, it's worth keeping some perspective.
The headline sales involve the rarest registrations in the country. Most private plates are bought for personal reasons, such as a name, initials, or a memorable date. Their value depends on demand, and like any asset, prices can go down as well as up.
What the record sales do show is that there's strong appetite for quality registrations. Short, clear and meaningful plates tend to hold their appeal over time. If you're buying with one eye on the future, it pays to choose carefully and buy from a trusted dealer.
