You should make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) if your vehicle is not being taxed and you're keeping it off the road. As with tax, a vehicle can be declared SORN online, by phone.
Registered keepers can declare their vehicle is off the road via DVLA's online service, or by their telephone service. DVLA sends a confirmation letter within four weeks. You should contact DVLA if you do not receive it.
Note the reference number from your V5C registration certificate, V11 or V85/1 reminder and use DVLA's online SORN service.

For new keepers who received a V5C in the current month, complete form V890 Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). Send the form to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AR.

The day you buy the vehicle marks the end of the SORN period with the previous keeper. Make a new SORN if you intend to keep the vehicle off the road.
Vehicles can be re-taxed using a V5C online or by phone.
Expect a letter from DVLA within four weeks of declaring SORN. Contact DVLA if you have not heard from them after this time - call them on 0300 790 6802.
