The Motability Scheme allows disabled people receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to affordably buy or hire an adapted car. The scheme is run by an independent charity - Motability.
You are eligible for the Motability Scheme if you receive either:
If you do not drive but meet one of these criteria, you can even apply for a car and propose two other people as drivers.
It is also possible to make an application for a disabled child aged 3+ who is receiving the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance.
There is also a hire scheme available to lease a new car from a Motability approved dealer for at least three years. In order to apply you need to have at least 12 months remaining DLA award.
The package includes insurance, servicing, and breakdown assistance. However those taking advantage of the scheme may need to pay for adding or removing any features used to adapt the vehicle.
Note that if you don't renew your DLA during the full length of your scheme, you will need to return your car.
Hire purchase allows you to buy a new or used car from a dealer over a period of three to five years. After this time you will have paid for, and own, the vehicle.
Motability can sometimes provide a grant for those suffering financial hardship. Contact Motability for more details.
Note that disabled people don't have to pay VAT when they hire a car via Motability.
