Motability Scheme Cars And Private Car Registrations Plates


Motability Scheme

If your car is under the Motability Scheme and you wish to display a private number plate, you will need contact the Motability Scheme Customer Services team on 0300 456 4566.

When you call, they will ask for details to ensure that the new private plates are owned by you or a partner who lives with you and are being fitted for you.

The details on the personalised number plates must relate either to you, the customer, or your partner.

If the Motability Scheme agrees to add your personalised number plates, they may also be able to update the online DVLA record on your behalf.

They can remove your plate for you if you are returning your car or transferring number plates between cars, but they are unable to accept any responsibility for the retention or transfer of a private number plate and you may lose your entitlement to the number plate if they have not been notified of your plans.

Adding New Plates For The First Time

To add private number plates for the first time, call The Motability Scheme on 0300 456 4566.

Before contacting them you will need either:

  • Certificate of Entitlement (V750) or the
  • Retention Certificate (V778) issued from the DVLA

Transferring Number Plates Between Motability Scheme Cars

If you have already placed an order for a new Motability Scheme car, or you are planning to do so, contact your dealer to request a transfer of your private number plate to the new car. It's a good idea to ask your dealer as far in advance as possible. Your dealer will check that the number plate complies with Scheme rules as part of the transfer process.

Once the process has been completed, they will update RSA Motability with the new registration details but it will be your responsibility to arrange for age-related plates to be made and fitted to the car you are returning. The DVLA currently charge a fee of £80 for this.

Removing Plates When You Return Your Car

The Motability Scheme will send you a letter approximately four weeks before you are due to end your current lease with more information.

  • If you wish to remove your personalised number plate, you will also need to arrange this before you return your car. You can complete the first half of this process with the DVLA. The details you will need to include are; the registration number you want to keep, your postcode (where the car is registered) and document reference number from the V5C registration document (which will be sent to you in the Motability Scheme letter approximately four weeks before the end of your lease). You should also have a debit or credit card to hand to pay the DVLA fee, which is currently £80. Once the plate has been removed, you will need to arrange for the age-related plates to be made and fitted to your current car within three working days.
  • If you do not wish to keep your personalised number plates, please contact the Motability Scheme Customer Services team on 0300 456 4566 as soon as possible to confirm that you are happy to relinquish your rights to the number plate. If you choose this option, they will sell the car at the end of your lease with your personalised number plate on it, resulting in you losing the right to display this private registration on a car in the future.
