So when the tree was discovered felled, police checked the logs. One vehicle of interest was spotted near the site. Its plate, captured by an ANPR camera, linked it to a known associate of one of the suspects.
From there, the picture started to come together, and according to court proceedings, mobile phone location data placed one man near the tree that afternoon. Later that night, a traffic camera picked up the vehicle of a second suspect driving along a nearby road. That number plate provided a vital link in confirming the timeline of events.

What this case highlights is the growing role number plates play in criminal investigations. In the past, an isolated location might have made it harder to connect the dots, but today, with a combination of surveillance cameras and vehicle data systems, the net tightens quickly.
