What Was the First UK Number Plate?
A 1 is widely recognised as the first registration issued by London County Council. However, surviving records show that DY 1 was issued in Hastings before A 1, making it the earliest documented UK registration mark. Both registrations date from late 1903, shortly before compulsory registration came into force.
