Why Have UK Number Plate Formats Changed?
Each registration format could produce only a limited number of unique combinations. As vehicle ownership increased, councils and later the DVLA needed to expand or replace systems that were running out of available marks. Changes also made registration years easier to identify and created a more consistent national system.
