When Were Number Plates First Introduced in the UK?
Number plates were introduced under the Motor Car Act 1903. The registration requirements came into force on 1 January 1904, although some councils began issuing registration marks during the final weeks of 1903. The Act required motor vehicles to be registered with a local authority and display their assigned registration mark.
