Why Doesn't My Personalised Registration Match My Vehicle's Age?

A personalised registration doesn't necessarily reflect the age of the vehicle displaying it. When a private number plate is transferred, it replaces the vehicle's original registration, meaning the age identifier shown on the number plate may no longer relate to the vehicle itself.

For example, a 2024 vehicle could display a dateless registration originally issued before 1963, while an older vehicle may display a registration that appears much newer than its original registration date. This is perfectly normal and does not change the vehicle's true age or registration history.

If you're trying to determine a vehicle's original registration age, don't rely solely on the number plate. Check the V5C log book, which records the vehicle's date of first registration regardless of any personalised registrations that have been assigned since.

This is also why it's important to use your vehicle's original registration date when checking number plate eligibility, rather than the age shown by a personalised registration currently displayed on the vehicle.
